House in East Hampton
Architect: Peter Pennoyer Architects
Sub-Style: Shingle Style
Year Completed: 2019
Size: 10,000 sq ft
Location: East Hampton, NY, USA

Set on the edge of an idyllic tidal pond on the south shore of Long Island, this 10,000 square foot house evokes the simplicity of a beach cottage that has been expanded over generations. Although the previous house on the site had been beyond repair, the owners had appreciated its time-worn appeal — its quirks and the accumulative effect of its growth through time. In the design of a new house on the four-acre site, PPA incorporated fragments and recreated certain quirks—such as the low porch with squared columns with views of the ocean and dunes. A new two-story bay window with spandrels subtly carved with sea goddesses was a new touch. The interiors are open, informal and bright — a reflection of the Shingle-style house plan—with laylights over the main and kitchen stairs to bring in added light. Niches, alcoves and Moorish lattice panels as well as Mathew Patrick Smyth’s decoration add to the layered life of the house.
